In-Home Session: Teryn + Adam

Picture
Teryn & Adam are legitimately living their best lives as newly weds in their new home that they have completely made their own. I know when I walked into their house for the first time I instantly felt like it was a home and their personalities were so much more clear. From the crisp minimalist white walls, warm scent of French press coffee and dehydrating citrus, to the carefully nurtured house plants - I truly felt like it was a window into who they were as people and their own perfect space on this earth. I love being able to connect peoples stories to how they live and express themselves.

Get to know Teryn & Adam:

Who are you two as people?
Teryn
I'm from Warsaw, Indiana (yup, I went to high school with Ben Higgins, LOL ;))—While I don’t ever see myself moving back to Indiana, I loved growing up there! My 2 best friends both just lived through the woods from my house and we had trails to each other’s houses. Takes me back to the good ‘ol days before social media and such—thank god for that because there would likely be some very embarrassing pictures/videos of me out there! Between the two of us, Adam is definitely the extrovert between the two of us—I like to think we balance each other out nicely ;)

I completed my undergrad in Dietetics at Purdue, and moved to Columbus for a Dietetic Internship at OSU followed by a Master’s Degree at OSU  in Human Nutrition.

Working as a research dietitian, I’m passionate about using evidence-based research to improve people’s wellbeing through food. I really love working with individuals one-on-one and teaching them about different eating patterns and how they can impact their health. Food/nutrition is such a personal thing and I enjoy sharing my experiences with others and empowering them to make small or big changes to improve their health.

Outside of work, I’m still pretty obsessed with food ;) My current project has been overhauling/expanding my veggie garden! Growing up I always remember my grandma taking care of her giant garden on the farm and my dad obsessing over his garden in our front yard—I guess it was inevitable that I would get this trait as well. There is something to be said about growing your own food from a seed, it really is so rewarding. I would love to have a small farm/homestead someday! I would also love to become a Master Gardener eventually and encourage others to create their own gardens. I would be able to teach people about the benefits of eating fruits and veggies and how they can grow them on their own!

Adam
I'm from Livonia, Michigan, but I have lived in Columbus now for over 5 years. When I was younger, I was always a ball of energy. And while I have slowed down slightly over the last couple of years, I’m still the same friendly, extroverted person I have always been. I am loyal to a fault, will always tell the truth, and can be overly dramatic in the simplest of situations. I always tell people that I can be friends with just about anyone, but the circle I keep of my closest friends is very small.

I did my undergrad at the University of Detroit, my Masters’ at Otterbein and I am currently in school at Ohio State University in their physical therapy program getting my doctorate degree.

I am very much looking forward to finishing school and becoming a therapist to help people. My future goal is to become the therapist of a professional sports team and treat sports injuries. This is a second career for me, however. Before going back to school, I played soccer professionally here in the US and abroad in Europe. Now that I am done playing, I want to make sure I am still connected to the game in some capacity, whether that be as a therapist or simply attending/watching games.

How did you two meet?
We met at a bar of all places! Adam was out with some of his teammates at the time and I was out with some of my friends from school. We each had a mutual friend who introduced us to each other that night and the rest is history! We dated for 3 and a half years before getting engaged and we got married this past December in front of close friends and family! ☺

What do you love most about eachother?
Teryn
One of the things I love most about Adam is that we are 100% comfortable with each other. We can be home together but be perfectly content doing our own separate thing in different rooms of the house—usually he is watching sports and I’m attempting some house project doing something with my plants. But on the flipside we are happy doing these things together—it may or may not take a little bit of coercing to get him on board with some of my project ideas and he usually has to explain what’s going on with the game but that’s what makes it fun! ☺

Adam
Teryn means everything to me. Without her in my life I am not able to be the best version of myself. When I get worked up from a long day or if someone cuts me off while driving, she is the one that brings a calming presence to the situation and allows me to refocus. When I judge someone (yes, we all do it; don’t lie to yourself) or a situation too quickly, she is the one that shows me a fresh perspective that I may be too blinded to see. She challenges me in the best way possible and that has allowed me to grow into a better man over the last four and a half years of our relationship/marriage.

What’s been your favorite thing about making your house a home with each other?

Direct quote from Adam “Collaboration, we get to both come up with ideas and then we pick yours!” LOL But seriously, it has been so great to make this place ours—it’s been fun figuring out what our style is and doing most of the updates ourselves. It has definitely pushed us outside of our comfort zone a few times, but Pinterest and YouTube have come to the rescue a time or two.

The hardest part of living together is if we get into an argument or disagreement about something, you have to face the issue and figure it out. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing; if anything, that has brought us closer together and allows us to grow as a couple. Living together forces you to develop that communication and it can be incredibly beneficial if you allow it to. At the end of the day, there is no one I would rather come home to and I look forward to doing it for the rest of our lives together. The hardest part is also, painting….it is the worst! We learned the hard way that even if a color claims to be gray it can turn out purple on the walls if the house faces north…needless to say the living room/dining area had to be painted twice within the first week of moving in. :/
